SIMULATION MODEL FOR THE STUDY OF TWO-WAY SHIP TRAFFIC THROUGH CANALS WHICH OFFER MULTIPLE ROUTING OPTIONS

The model addresses the problem of simulating the two-way movement of ships through parallel channels each containing a sequence of locks and reaches. An endogenous state dependent assignment decision rule is used based on expected transit times via alternative routes. It is assumed that a statistical relationship can be established between the channel conditions prevailing when a ship arrives at the assignment decision point and the subsequent transit time experienced by the vessel. Predictive equations are derived via analysis of an "Experience Data Bank" built by separately simulating the operation of each channel and recording prior channel conditions and subsequent transit times.
