ACCIDENT RISK INDEX OF INDIAN STATES
This publication presents the results of studies on road accidents in India. Along with the increase in population and the number of Vehicles, there has ben an increase in traffic accidents. The accident rate differs widely from one State to another, and in this study, the accident risk index (ARI) was computed for the various State of India. The ARI has been computed through the use of a set of accident ratios which have been combined by assigning to them certain weights. The study also identified the factors which may influence the accident risk. The level of urbanization, proportion of 3-wheelers and quality of roads were found to be the most dominant factors influencing the accident risk index.
