STUDIES ON THE APPLICATION OF WAVE PATTERN ANALYSIS TO THE TANK TESTS WITH SHIP MODELS

In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the experimental determination of wave resistance by measurements of wave patterns created by scale-models in a towing tank. This is called "wave pattern analysis" and a number of methods have been proposed. Through the prototype system of wave recording and its analysis in routine testing, wave pattern analysis has played an important role in the design of hull forms as well as in theoretical studies. It is seen as especially effective when considering problems such as the separation of resistance components, hull form improvement from the angle of wave measurement and data processing system in IHI's Ship Model Basin, the utility of wave pattern analysis in resistance components separation and some of the applications to hull form improvement, incorporated in the minimum wave resistance theory.
