ALTERNATE RESURFACING STRATEGIES - FINAL REPORT, VOLUME 2, APPENDICES A-H

Alternative resurfacing strategies were reviewed. Conventional materials, Portland Cement Concrete and asphalt concrete were selected by the sponsor as the most appropriate current material technology for this research. A project level pavement resurfacing design system developed at the Universtiy of Texas was modified to include flexible pavement analysis. This model uses mechanistic analysis to estimate the life of resurfacing strategies. The development of reliable input data for the cost variables requires careful review of bid documents. Several bid documents from Pennsylvania were analyzed to define costs for overlays, pavement repairs, etc. Traffic records were analyzed to determine typical traffic distribution models and multiple travel runs were performed to demonstrate the model capacity. While further development can replace some of the specific elements, the model developed under this project provides a firm foundation for further developments in the systematic analysis of resurfacing strategies.
