INVESTIGATION OF SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION METHODS FOR PREVAILING GEOLOGIC CONDITIONS IN SOUTH CAROLINA. FINAL REPORT

Subsurface conditions at sites in the Coastal Plain region of South Carolina were investigated using standard penetration and mechanical quasi-static cone penetration tests. The penetration test results are compared with measured static axial pile capacity. The cone penetration test results are compared with stratigrpahy and soil types encountered at each site. Results of this study show that with certain limitations, cone penetration test results can be used to assess general stratigraphy and soil type and predict static axial pile capacity with reasonably accuracy. Findings from these investigations were also used to assess methods currently used by the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation (the EN formula and correlations with standard penetration test N values) for estimating pile capacity. The study shows the importance of local or site correlations. (Author)
