ANALOG COMPUTER DETERMINES SHIP CARGO DISTRIBUTION

A small electronic analog computer, which has been developed to instantly show vital information for all ship loading conditions for tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and LASH ships, is described. This computer computes and continuously displays bending moment, shear forces, trim, mean draft, and deadweight of a vessel, and all possible combinations of loading can be simulated, with step by step indicators of what is happening to the ship as loads are varied in individual cargo compartments. The operation of the unit, as well as the information which it produces, is described and discussed fully in the article.
