A unique technique to measure the thrust and torque variations on one blade of a propeller model using a modified Kumai method is introduced. The method is very useful in calculating the bearing forces. The results of model experiments are presented, and then, the estimated bearing forces in a ship's wake were calculated. The calculated values of the bearing forces could not be evaluated as the experiments on the ship were not performed. Pressure fluctuations on the hull above the propeller were measured on the model and the ship, and comparisons between the results are discussed especially on phases of pressure fluctuations from a point of view of cavitation. The experiments concerning the flow control fin to reduce the vibratory forces were carried out on the same model but the results will be presented in another paper.
