Oregon's statewide bicycle path and pedestrian legislation is reviewed, and the State's bicycle route program is outlined. The importance is recognized of public involvement in the development of the program; citizens groups are actively developing master plans in many cities. Three basic types of bikeway design are identified, and the costs of surfacing and base ranges are considered. Characteristics to be considered include in the rational design of bikeways are: design speeds, space requirements, clearances, grades, surfacing and radius of curvature.
