A STATUS REPORT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SKID RESISTANCE EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS ON P205/1 (FORMERLY S12) NEAR DAVEYTON AFTER SEVEN YEARS

A number of road surfacings comprising single surface treatment, open graded asphalt and gap graded asphalt with rolled-in chippings, were constructed on a heavily trafficked rural road (3000 vehicles per day in one direction) to evaluate their performance and skid resistance when certain design parameters were varied. Interim conclusions are that the performance has been satisfactory and after seven years none of the sections should be rehabilitated. Skid resistance has been greater than 0.45 in terms of SCRIM measurements at 80km/h, and texture depth has been greater than 0.6mm. The performance of the single surface treatment sections has provided interim guidelines for the design of such surfacings on heavily trafficked routes. (TRRL)
