ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR AGGREGATES - FINAL REPORT

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation currently uses a statistically based (restricted performance/quality assurance specification of bituminous concrete. The purpose of this project was to extend the use of statistically based spcifications to unbound aggregates. In addition, the question of an optimum sampling location was addressed. Based on statistical and on legal considerations, a mini-stockpile formed in the producer's yard was identified as the optimum sampling location. An exhaustive field sampling program was executed for N-1B (AASHTO No. 8), 2B (AASHTO No. 57), and 2A aggregate. The sampling program plan was used to determine the components of variance necessary to develop a tentative specification. OC curves and expected payment curves were developed as part of the specification. The tentative specification is applicable to both new construction and maintenance work, but it should be verified in field trials before it is adopted by thee department. (Author)
