UTEXAS (UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS ANALYSIS OF SLOPES) A COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR SLOPE STABILITY CALCULATIONS

A general purpose computer program has been developed for the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation for use in performing slope stability calculations. The computer program includes a number of improvements over a previous computer program (SSTAB1) developed by Wright (1982). The program improvements include the capabilities for handling multiple piezometric surfaces, curved shear strength envelopes, an automatic search routine for locating a critical noncircular shear surface, ans seismic coefficients to approximate earthquake loading. In addition, the program is coded in FORTRAN 77 (ANSI X3.9-1978) to enhance portability among computing systems and has implemented format-free ("free-field") input with extensive error checking of input data. The computer program is based on Spencer's procedure of slices as modified by Wright (1969, 1975), which is a procedure that fully satisfies the requirements of static equilibrium. Thi report is the first of two reports which provide the user's documentation for the program. This report describes the features and requirements of the program and describes the detailed procedures for preparing data input. The second report provides a series of seven example problems with input data listings which may be used as "benchmark" checks for the program and as a further guide for preparing input data and using the program.
