REPORT OF THE SIXTY-NINTH ROUND TABLE ON TRANSPORT ECONOMICS HELD IN PARIS 6TH-7TH DECEMBER 1984 ON THE FOLLOWING TOPIC: CHANGES IN TRANSPORT USERS' MOTIVATIONS FOR MODAL CHOICE: FREIGHT TRANSPORT

Despite the policies applied in most countries to influence modal split in favour of rail, road freight transport has continued to develop while rail has declined, trends that reflect the reeasons behind shippers' choices. The Round Table sought therefore to get a clearer picture of the way in which modal choice has been affected by recent trends in the motivation of the economic agents in the freight transport sector. The subject of the role of logistics in modal choice and mode adaptation was tackled by examining the following points: 1. The limited scope for modal choice. 2. Economic developments and motives for modal choice. 3. The extent to which modes can be adjusted. (Author)
