SAFETY IN SMALL URBAN AREAS

LA SECURITE DANS LES PETITES AGGLOMERATIONS

Statistical data are given on fatalities, severity, and types of personal injuries, and distribution of casualties in France as a function of the size of the urban area and type of road. A sample consisting of 35 urban areas varying in size but containing less than 4300 inhabitants, in which 279 accidents occurred in 2 years was selected in three departments. A study of the accidents, characteristics of the road network and environment was conducted to investigate the influence of the structure and functions of the road network on traffic accidents. The results are presented according to the following road types: main roads with 3 or more lanes, main roads of medium width (2 lanes), main roads in recently urbanized zones, service roads varying in traffic density.
