MOISTURE, PORE SPACE, AND BULK DENSITY CHANGES IN FROZEN SOIL

In the upper 15 inches of 2 frozen loam soils, one bare and one under alfalfa, moisture contents usually exceeded prefreeze field maximum. Total pore space was always above that before freezing; bulk density was predominantly less that the lowest expected prefreeze bulk density. Moisture changes in the frozen soils are attributed solely to internal moisture movement.
