CONSEQUENCES OF INCREASED AXLE LOAD FOR BUSES. PART 2: TYRE AND SUSPENSION

KONSEKVENSER AV HOEJT AXELTRYCK FOER BUSSAR. DEL 2: DAECK OCH FJAEDRING

This report is based on a literature study, measurements of the dynamic rear wheel load on buses and results obtained from simulations using a mathematical vehicle model. The purpose of the literature study was to investigate the possibilities of reducing the dynamic forces on the road arising from the vertical movements of the vehicle when travelling on rough roads by constructional measures on the vehicle. The study has covered the springing and damping properties of the vehicle body in bounces as well as in roll, the properties of different bogie layouts, the vertical springing properties of the tyre and the relationship between internal tyre pressure and the pressure in the contact area between tyre and road surface. Finally the breakdown of the road under the influence of traffic load has been studied. The purpose of the field measurements was to produce experimental results to be used in validation of the mathematical model. Simulations using this model aim to study the influence of the magnitude of the vertical contact forces between the wheel and the road surface by different vehicle parameters, foremost the suspension spring rate and damping characteristics. The results from the measurements as well as the simulations show that the dynamic wheel load is less for the bus with conventional springs compared to the bus with air suspension system. In other connections it has been demonstrated that air springs are more comfortable to the vehicle body and to the persons inside the vehicle than conventional springs. However, the investigation shows that this does not imply that vehicles equipped with air springs are less damaging to the road. It is the damping properties and not the type of springs that are essential for the level of the dynamic load. (TRRL)
