SIDE PROTECTION IN 2-DOOR AND 4-DOOR PRODUCTION VEHICLES
A study was conducted to provide the following side impact information: A crash test mode and severity level representing a threshold life threatening injury level (AIS greater than or equal to 4) for a mid-sized vehicle; data needed to extrapolate the performance of the modified V.W. Rabbit into the vehicle fleet; and data needed to investigate apparent safety differences between 2-door and 4-door vehicles and between varying weights within the vehicle fleet. The data was obtained by performing side impact crash tests with production vehicles, using the NHTSA's Moving Deformable Barrier (MDB).
