SAFETY BENEFITS FROM EFFECTIVE DIRECTIONAL SIGNING FOR FREEWAY ENTRANCE RAMPS

This report presents an analysis of interchange configurations and points out potential resons for a driver's error in his efforts to seek the proper entrance to the freeway from the local approach road. The paper emphasizes the use of effective directional signing as a positive measure to lead drivers to the desired ramp, thus minimizing the chance for wrong way movement. Documentation includes past studies and current practices of directional signing on local road approaches to freeways, including the history of Ohio's studies and practices, primarily in urban areas, including experience and typical directional signing applications employed. The report concludes with suggested rules to follow in developing effective directional signing systems and also lists additional research needs for a more comprehensive effort in the development of standards for effective directional signing on local road approaches to freeway entrance ramps.
