METALLURGY OF ROLLING BEARINGS

A rolling bearing must resist deformation and wear under conditions of heavy loading. Races, balls or rollers must have high hardness and elastic limit and resistance to fatigue failure. The factors which affect fatigue (cleaness of steel, structure of free carbides and heat treatment) are evaluated. The chemical composition and hardenability of six through-hardening steels are listed in chart form.
