RESPONSE OF COMMERCIAL CHEMILUMINESCENT NO-NO2 ANALYSERS TO OTHER NITROGEN-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS

Commercial analyzers for nitrogen oxides using carbon or molybdenum converters were found to be nonspecific for determining NO2. The instruments not only measure NO2, but also simultaneously respond nearly quantitatively to peroxyacetyl nitrate, and a variety of other organic nitrates and nitrites. They respond nonquantitatively to compounds such as nitroethane and nitric acid. The implications of these observations are discussed.
