EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE PULL-OUT STRESS AND NEGATIVE FRICTION OF PILES IN UNSTABLE GROUND

ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DES EFFORTS D'ARRACHAGE ET DE FROTTEMENT NEGATIF SUR LES PIEUX EN MILIEW PULVERULENT

The article recalls that the relative movement of the soil in relation to piles is the same, whether the pile is subjected to a pull-out stress or to a negative friction. He proposes to study this phenomenon in sandy media. After describing the experimental devices, the author presents the results of the tests. Within the limits of the experimentation, the negative friction and the pull-out stresses are identical. The stress-displacement curve includes a maximum, which is a function of the angle of internal fraction, followed by a less elevated level. In conclusion, a simple formula, which is practical to apply, is proposed. After a review of various hypotheses generally assumed in the theory of earth pressure, the new experimental device used by the C.E.B.T.P. and its novel features are described. The tests carried out have made it possible to study, for two different densities of material: (1) the displacement of the screen necessary for the mobilization of the active pressure; (2) the obliquity of the pressure on the screen; and (3) the representative curves of the total pressure in terms of the slope of the free surface.
