DETERMINATION OF THE SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA OF SOILS ON THE BASE OF ANION-EXCLUSION MEASUREMENTS

Values for the specific surface area of 12 Dutch soils were measured according to the exclusion of chloride. Positive adsorption was prevented by phosphate additions. For three soils the experiment was repeated over a wider range of electrolyte levels and resulted in the same values as those found at relatively high salt concentrations. An explanation of the discrepancy between the exclusion method and the ethylene glycol method requires further investigation, in which special attention should be paid to the role of organic matter.
