HYPOTHESES AND THEORIES FOR FORECASTING THE SETTLEMENT OF EMBANKMENTS ON COMPRESSIBLE SOIL

HYPOTHESES ET THEORIES POUR LA PREVISION DES TASSEMENTS DES REMBLATS SUR SOLS COMPRESSIBLES

THE CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENTS ON COMPRESSIBLE SOIL REQUIRES DETAILED STUDIES IF CONSTRUCTION TIME AND SETTLEMENT ARE TO BE REDUCED TO A MINIMUM. PRESENT THEORIES ARE REVIEWED AND HYPOTHESES AND THEIR POSSIBILITIES OF APPLICATION ARE DISCUSSED. APART FROM THE NON-UNIDIMENSIONAL NATURE OF CONSOLIDATION, THE CAUSES OF DEVIATION BETWEEN PREDICTED AND ACTUAL RESULTS ARE NUMEROUS, SPECIALLY AS REGARDS SETTLEMENT TIME. THE COMPLEX LAWS GOVERNING THE BEHAVIOUR OF SOIL SKELETON WOULD TEND TO LEAD TO THE UTILIZATION OF GENERAL NON-LINEAR THEORIES (E.G. INTEGRATION OF PRIMARY CONSOLIDATION AND SECONDARY COMPRESSION). HOWEVER SUCH THEORIES ARE DIFFICULT TO APPLY AND REQUIRE A VERY THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBGRADE; THEREFORE THEY SHOULD ONLY BE USED FOR SOLVING VERY DIFFICULT PROBLEMS. ARTICLE IS IN FRENCH.
