DIAPHRAGM WALLING IN JAPAN

THE AUTHOR GIVES A REVIEW OF THE TECHNIQUES, EQUIPMENT AND DEVELOPMENTS RELATING TO DIAPHRAGM WALL/SLURRY TRENCHING IN JAPAN, WHERE OVER 1 MILLION SQUARE METRES OF WALLS HAVE ALREADY BEEN CONSTRUCTED OFTEN UNDER ADVERSE SOIL AND WORKING CONDITIONS. MENTION IS MADE OF THE MACHINERY USED AND INCLUDES A FIGURE DEPICTING THE 9 TYPES OF PROCESS THAT HAVE BEEN USED, A TABLE SUMMARIZING THE PROCESS/GROUND APPLICATIONS FOR EACH OF THE 15 DIAPHRAGM WALL EXCAVATING MACHINES THAT HAVE BEEN USED, A SECOND TABLE SUMMARIZING THE CONSTRUCTIONAL ACCURACY (PRECISION OF PLUMBNESS AND FLATNESS OF FINISHED SURFACE) THAT HAS BEEN ATTAINED UNDER DIFFERENT SOIL CONDITIONS. PARTICULAR REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EXCAVATION TIME AND GROUND CONDITIONS. THE NEXT PART OF THE ARTICLE IS CONCERNED WITH THE DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS OF THE METHOD. PARTICULAR REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE TBW PROCESS WHICH HAS BEEN USED IN JAPAN BECAUSE OF THE ADDITIONAL NEED FOR A DIAPHRAGM WALL TO FUNCTION AS A SEISMIC WALL. ASPECTS OF DIAPHRAGM WALL TECHNOLOGY ARE NEXT DISCUSSES. THESE INCLUDE THE USE OF A NEW STABILIZING AGENT "TELMACH" & RESEARCH ON DIAPHRAGM WALL MEASURING APPARATUS. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY FURTHER DETAILS OF THE USE OF THE TBW PROCESS. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES BY MAKING REFERENCE TO AREAS WHERE FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS ARE NECESSARY.
