A STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF SANDS UNDER IMPACT LOADING

THE PRESENT STUDY ATTEMPTS TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF SANDS UNDER IMPACT LOADING MAKING USE OF THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF SANDS UNDER FAST REPETITIVE LOADING AND SETS FORTH GUIDELINES FOR FURTHER RESEARCH ON THE SHEAR CHARACTERISTICS OF SAND WHEN SUBJECTED TO IMPACT LOADING. THE EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES USED FOR CONDUCTING THE IMPACT LOAD TESTS ARE DESCRIBED AND TEST RESULTS DISCUSSED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT: (1) DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF DRY AND SATURATED SAND SAMPLES SUBJECTED TO IMPACT LOADING REMAIN ESSENTIALLY THE SAME UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS. (2) THE RATE OF DEFORMATION IS RAPID UNDER THE FIRST FEW BLOWS AND IT BECOMES CONSTANT AFTER A CERTAIN NUMBER OF BLOWS. (3) WHEREAS A DEFINITE STAGE OF FAILURE COULD BE SEEN IN STATIC TESTS, NO SUCH PHENOMENON OCCURS UNDER IMPACT LOADING BUT THE SAMPLE GOES ON DEFORMING IRRESPECTIVE OF THE NUMBER OF BLOWS.
