NUCLEAR PROPULSION FOR CONTAINER SHIPS
Since 1959, several studies of nuclear powered ships have been effected by Vickers Ltd. Studies associated with medium sized tankers, a cargo liner, and a passenger ship indicated no justification for their further development. Considerable aids in achieving optimal reactor designs had been provided by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. A PWR (pressurized water reactor) designed by the UKAEA had been chosen. The team concluded that the case for nuclear powered container ships was strictly in terms of their economic viability. In these terms, the team has evolved a "global fleet" concept.
