CATAMARANS. DREAM OR REALITY
The history of the catamaran is reviewed and a table lists the major features of important catamarans of the world from 1662 to the present. Recent developments in the United States, the Soviet Union, Japan and Holland are summarized. The uses to which catamarans built to date have been put are discussed. Catamarans and monohulls that nominally perform the same mission, carry the same payload, and have the same speed and endurance are compared on the basis of the following factors--deck area, enclosed volume, subdivision, maneuverability, structure, structural weight, costs, and size. Areas requiring further study are mentioned.
