MEASUREMENT OF THE PROPERTIES OF EXPANSIVE AND COLLAPSIBLE SOILS, UNDER CONTROLLED SUCTION

MEDIDA DE LAS PROPIEDADES DE SUELOS EXPANSIVOS Y COLAPSIBLES BAJO SUCCION CONTROLADA

SWELLING, WHICH OCCURS IN A SPECIFIC SOIL, IS A FUNCTION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM SUCTION OF PORE WATER. AN APPARATUS FOR STUDYING SWELLING AND COLLAPSE PHENOMENA UNDER CONTROLLED SUCTION CONDITIONS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. SERIES OF CALIBRATION TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT SO THAT DEFORMATIONS DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE APPARATUS, CAN BE CONTROLLED. USING PERMANENT OVERLOAD THROUGHOUT THE TEST, IT WAS POSSIBLE TO ISOLATE THE DEFORMATIONS OF THE SEMI-PERVIOUS MEMBRANE IN THE FINAL RESULTS. RESULTS OF TESTS WITH EXPANSIVE AND COLLAPSIBLE SOILS ARE INCLUDED.
