PROBABILISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE STABILITY OF ROCK SLOPES

ANALISIS PROBABILISTA DE LA ESTABILIDAD DE TALUDES ROCOSOS

THE STABILITY OF DISCONTINUOUS ROCK MASSES WITH LARGE JOINTS IS STUDIED. A NEW METHOD OF CALCULATION IS SUBMITTED WHICH, IN VARIOUS ASPECTS, MODIFIES THE KNOWN CALCULATION OF THE LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM OF SLIDING BLOCKS AND OVERCOMES SOME LIMITATIONS SUCH AS, FOR EXAMPLE, THE FACT THAT (1) NEITHER COHESION NOR TENSILE STRENGTH WERE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT, (2) ONLY STATISTICAL DATA ON THE DISCONTINUITIES WERE AVAILABLE AND (3) THE DEFINITION OF AN ARBITRARY COEFFICIENT OF SAFETY TOOK ACCOUNT OF ONLY THREE SPECIFIC DISCONTINUITIES. THE MOST IMPORTANT MODIFICATION CONSISTS IN REPLACING THE CONCEPT OF COEFFICIENT OF STABILITY BY A STABILITY CURVE, WHICH IS A CURVE OF PROBABILITIES OF THE DIFFERENT COEFFICIENTS OF SAFETY, OBTAINED FROM THE STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF THE STRENGTH PARAMETERS OF THE JOINTS AND THEIR GEOMETRY. THE EFFECT OF THE LENGTH OF THE SLOPE AND OF THE SPACING BETWEEN DISCONTINUITIES IS ALSO TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.
