PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL MECHANISM OF THE PHENOMENON CAUSING THE FAILURE OF ROCK MATERIALS

MECANISMO FISICO-QUIMICO DEL FENOMENO QUE ORIGINA EL COLAPSO EN LOS MATERIALES PETREOS

THE OBJECT OF THE STUDY IS TO EXPLAIN OF THE INITIAL PROCESS OF COLLAPSE OF ROCK FILLS BY MEANS OF A PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL MECHANISM WHICH IS SUMMARIZED IN 4 POINTS: (1) COHESION IN ROCKS IS DERIVED FROM THE TENSION OF THE CHEMICAL LINKS WHICH JOIN THE ATOMS TOGETHER; (2) THESE LINKS, OF AN ELECTRICAL NATURE, ARE AFFECTED BY THE PRESENCE OF DIPOLAR MOLECULES (WATER); (3) THE COLLAPSE OCCURS BY BREAKAGE OF THE TENSIONED LINKS IN CONTACT WITH THE DIPOLAR LIQUID (WATER); (4) THE PROGRESSIVE PROCESS DEPENDS ON THE POLAR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LIQUID. THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK DESCRIBED HERE CONFIRMS THIS MECHANISM, AS IT IS OBSERVED THAT THE SETTLEMENT OF THE ROCK FILL DEPENDS ON THE DIELECTRIC CONSTANT OF THE LIQUID USED (FORMAMIDE, WATER, METHANOL AND OCTANE).
