LOADING TEST ON A PILE OF THE GENERALISIMO BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER LIOBREGAT, AT MOLINS DE REY, BARCELONA

PRUEBA DE BARGA DE UN PILOTE EN EL PUENTE DEL GENERALISIMO SOBRE EL RIO LLOBREGAT EN MOLINS DE REY, BARCELONA

TO CHECK THE FUTURE BEHAVIOUR OF THE FOUNDATION OF A PRESTRESSED HYPERSTATIC BRIDGE, A LOADING TEST WAS CONDUCTED ON ONE PILE, 23.6 M LONG WITH A CROSS-SECTION OF 1.8X1.0 M2, THE LOAD REACHING UP TO 1.500 TONS. THE PILE WAS ANCHORED BY MEANS OF INJECTION. THE SOIL CONSISTED OF 6.0 M SAND WITH GRAVEL, 6 M STONE AND GRAVEL WITH SAND, 2 M SAND, 9.5 M SILT-SANDY GRAVEL WITH SOME STONE, AND UNDERNEATH 4 M FINE SILTY SAND OVER A STRATUM OF ARGILITES AND MARLS OF GREAT THICKNESS. THE PILE WAS INSTRUMENTED WITH EXTENSOMETRIC GAUGES IN ORDER TO RECORD THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION ALONG ITS WHOLE LENGTH. THE PILE WAS DRILLED AND A METAL PIPE FITTED WITH FOUR GAUGES AT EACH OF FOUR DIFFERENT LEVELS, THE HOLE BEING FILLED SUBSEQUENTLY WITH CEMENT GROUT. THE MAXIMUM SETTLEMENT OF THE PILE WAS IN THE RANGE OF 5.5 MM. THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION COULD BE MEASURED BY MEANS OF THE EXTENSOMETRIC GAUGE, WITH THE RESULT THAT 50% OF THE LOAD WAS ABSORBED BY THE 8 M LAYER OF SAND AND GRAVEL CLOSEST TO THE SURFACE, THE POINT BEING REACHED BY LOADS UNDER 15% OF THE EXTERNAL LOAD.
