SIMPLIFIED METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF LOADS ON EMBEDDED ASBESTOS CEMENT PIPES

METHODO ABREVIADO PARA LA DETERMINACION DE CARGAS DE APLASTAMIENTO SOBRE TUBOS DE AMIANTO-CEMENTO ENTERRADOS

A SIMPLIFIED METHOD FOR THE RAPID DESIGN OF EMBEDDED ASBESTOS CEMENT PIPES IS PRESENTED. THE AUTHOR STUDIES SEPARATELY THE EFFECTS OF SOIL PRESSURE AND TRAFFIC LOAD. TWO SITUATIONS ARE CONSIDERED IN THE STUDY OF THE SOIL PRESSURE, DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE ARCH EFFECT IN THE SOIL ALLEVIATES THE PRESSURE ON THE PIPE OR NOT: WHEN THE PIPE IS PLACED ON THE BOTTOM OF A NARROW TRENCH, OR ON THE BOTTOM OF A WIDE TRENCH, OR UNDER AN EARTH FILL. THE SEPARATION BETWEEN THE TWO SITUATIONS IS DETERMINED BY THE LIMIT OVERBURDEN FOR WHICH A FORMULA IS DERIVED IN THE ARTICLE. FROM THE EXPRESSION DERIVED FOR EACH TYPE OF LOAD, THE AUTHOR PLOTS A CHART FOR EACH OF THREE TYPES OF SOIL (SAND, CLAYEY SAND AND CLAY) WHICH ONLY DEPENDS ON THE OVERBURDEN, THE WIDTH OF THE TRENCH AND THE DIAMETER OF THE PIPE. A SIMILAR CHART IS INCLUDED TO CONSIDER THE EFFECT OF TRAFFIC LOAD. THE TOTAL LOAD ON THE PIPE IS THE SUM OF THE TWO LOADS GIVEN BY THE CHARTS. THE AUTHOR ASSESSES THAT ERRORS IN THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE COMPUTERISED INTEGRATION OF THE DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS ARE WITHIN 5%, EVEN THOUGH THE OVERBURDEN AMOUNTS UP TO 7 M.
