NEW TESTING DEVICE FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE STRENGTH OF VEHICLE STRUCTURES
NEUARTIGE VERSUCHSEINRICHTUNG ZUR ERPROBUNG DER FESTIGKEIT VON FAHRZEUGSTRUCKTUREN
The description of a testing device is given which enables the simulation of vehicle collisions against a nearly rigid barrier at low speeds. The device consists of a pendulum frame, a concrete-made moving barrier and a cable winch by which the test object is brought to the required level of energy. Designed for any wheel track and wheelbase dimensions resp. the test object (totally assembled vehicles, bodies-in-white, vehicle components) can be subjected to collision tests up to a limit speed of approx. 7 m/s. The crash velocity of the test object is determined by linear measurement of the buckling corresponding to the respective level of energy and is confirmed by light barrier measurement. The equivalence of both test methods, pendulum or linear barrier collision, is proved in this connexion. Practical conclusions for the development of body structures are drawn from the measuring results.
