THE POSSIBLE USES OF LIGHT-WEIGHT CONCRETE ARE DISCUSSED, AND A STUDY MADE OF LIGHT-WEIGHT AGGREGATES, THEIR CLASSIFICATION, MANUFACTURE (PREPARATION AND BAKING OF EXPANDED CLAY AND EXPANDED SHALE AGGREGATES), CHARACTERISTICS (BULK DENSITY, WATER ABSORPTION, ETC). MENTION IS MADE OF A DRAFT SPECIFICATION P 13-309 PRESENTLY UNDER STUDY FOR EXPANDED CLAY. LIGHT- WEIGHT AGGREGATE CONCRETE WITH FULL TEXTURE IS STUDIED AS REGARDS ITS USE AS THERMAL INSULATING MATERIAL, FOR STANDARD REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES (250 TO 300 BAR STRENGTH), FOR SPECIAL HIGH-STRENGTH REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES AND FOR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE (400 TO 500 BAR STRENGTH, BULK DENSITY REACHING 1800 KG/M CUBED), THE ADVANTAGE RESIDING IN THE LIGHT WEIGHT. MENTION IS MADE OF PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS (BULK DENSITY, COMPRESSIVE AND TENSILE STRENGTH, DEFORMABILITY UNDER LOAD, SHRINKAGE, CREEP, COEFFICIENT OF THERMAL EXPANSION, THERMAL INSULATION, RESISTANCE TO FROST AND FIRE, SOUND INSULATION, ADHESION, ETC).
