KINETICS OF THE STRENGTH OF HARDENED PORTLAND CEMENT PASTE
KINETIKA PROCHNOSTI PORTLANDTSEMENTHOGO KAMIYA
AN INITIAL RAPID HARDENING RATE IS HARMFUL TO THE FINAL STRENGTH OF HARDENED CEMENT. THIS CAN PERHAPS BE EXPLAINED BY THE FACT THAT A MORE RAPID INCREASE IN STRENGTH LEADS TO THE FORMATION OF A DENSER CEMENT GEL, WHICH IN TURN LEADS TO A MARKED DECREASE IN HYDRATION DEPTH AND A LOWERING OF THE FINAL STRENGTH. STRENGTH AND SPECIFIC SURFACE MEASUREMENTS TOGETHER WITH ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC ANALYSES SUPPORT THESE CONCLUSIONS. THE HARDENING OF PORTLAND CEMENT SEEMS TO SLOW DOWN PROPORTIONALLY TO THE SQUARE OF THE SPECIFIC RATE OF HARDENING. A RELATION FOR CALCULATING THE RELATIVE FINAL STRENGTH (% OF THE STRENGTH AT 28 DAYS) AS A FUNCTION OF THE SPECIFIC RATE OF HARDENING AND OF THE C3S CONTENT SEEMS TO BE VERIFIED WITH SUFFICIENT ACCURACY BY EXPERIMENTAL DATA.
