SERIES OF TESTS ON THE RESISTANCE OF PAVEMENT CONCRETE TO FROST

THE AUTHORS FEEL THAT THE STANDARDIZED FROST RESISTANCE TEST IS NOT SUFFICIENT, POINTING OUT THAT DURING THE FREEZING- THAWING CYCLE FREEZING TAKES PLACE IN THE AIR AND THAWING IN WATER AND, FURTHERMORE, THAT THE TEST DOES NOT TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE EFFECT OF DEICING SALTS AND THE MECHANICAL ACTION OF TRAFFIC. A NEW METHOD WAS DEVELOPED: SAMPLES PREVIOUSLY SATURATED WITH WATER ARE SUBJECTED TO FROST IN WATER AT -17 DEGREES C FOR 4 HOURS, THEN AT -10 DEGREES C; THEY ARE TREATED WITH DEICING SALT, THEN, AFTER WASHING, THEY ARE DEFROSTED IN WATER AT 20 DEGREES C. EVERY TENTH CYCLE THE SAMPLES ARE WEIGHED. AT 50, 75 AND 150 CYCLES SOME SAMPLES ARE SELECTED IN THE BATCH FOR COMPRESSION AND IMPACT TESTS. DURING THE LATTER TEST THE SAMPLES ARE SUBJECTED TO SHOCKS DURING TWO HOURS IN A BALL GRINDER. THIS SERIES OF TESTS, MORE STRINGENT THAN THE STANDARDIZED TEST, IS, ACCORDING TO THE AUTHORS, MORE REPRESENTATIVE OF SERVICE CONDITIONS AND FACILITATES A BETTER CLASSIFICATION OF CONCRETE.
