SOME CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT THE HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES OF BLAST- FURNACE SLAG

ENIGE BESCHOUWINGEN OVER DE HYDRAULICITEIT VAN HOOGOVENSLAKKEN

AFTER HAVING RECALLED THAT A GRANULAR ROADBASE EXHIBITING HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES CAN CONTRIBUTE TO A LONGER SERVICE LIFE OF THE PAVEMENT BY ATTAINING A HIGHER STIFFNESS THE AUTHOR POSES THE PROBLEM OF HOW TO CHECK THE HARDENING THAT MAY BE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP IN THE ROADBASE, PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION. AS A MEAN FACTOR IN THE HYDRAULIC ACTION OF SLAG HE REGARDS THE PRESENCE OF A SUFFICIENT QUANTITY OF FINE MATERIAL WHICH IS INDICATED BY THE SPECIFIC SURFACE. THE TEST FOR HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES DESCRIBED IN THE RIJKSWATERSTAAT SPECIFICATIONS IS NOT, IN HIS OPINION, ALWAYS RELIABLE. MOREOVER IT TAKES TOO MUCH TIME BEFORE THE RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE WHICH MAY CAUSE DELAY IN THE CONSTRUCTION. TWO PRACTICAL CASES IN WHICH THE HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES OF SLAG WERE NOT SATISFACTORILY PREDICTED BY TEST RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED. A CLOSE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE SUPPLIER OF SLAG AND THE CUSTOMER AT THE TESTING TOGETHER WITH A GUARANTEE ARRANGEMENT ARE RECOMMENDED.
