PRAGUE METRO MINDS THE HERITAGE

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE PRAGUE METRO WHICH IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION WITHIN THE LIMITATIONS OF PRESERVING THE HISTORIC CITY CENTRE. THE 6.7KM FIRST SECTION WITH 9 STATIONS HAS BEEN OPENED. THE FIRST PHASE INCLUDES 30KM AND 40 STATIONS WHILE THREE FURTHER PHASES WILL BRING THE SYSTEM TO 90KM AND 104 STATIONS. ALL THE STATIONS HAVE BEEN BUILT IN OPEN TRENCHES WITH INCLINED SLOPES HELD IN PLACE WITH DIAPHRAGM OR PILED WALLS AND BRACED SHEETING. THE VARIOUS STRATA INVOLVED AND THE NEED TO CAUSE MINIMUM DISTURBANCE HAVE MEANT THAT SEVERAL DIFFERENT TUNNELLING TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN USED. THESE INCLUDE THE SHIELD METHOD AND A RING SYSTEM OF TUNNELLING, BOTH OF WHICH ARE DESCRIBED. THE EARTHWORKS INVOLVED HAS BEEN FULLY MECHANISED AND THE CENTRAL MIXING PLANT FOR CONCRETE IS AUTOMATED. A TOWNSHIP HAS BEEN BUILT TO CATER FOR THE WORKFORCE.
