GEOMETRIC APPROACH TO DESIGN OF CONTINUOUS PRESTRESSED CONCRETE DECKS WITH PARABOLIC TENDON PROFILES

The mathematical logic and the geometric significance inherent with an engineering technique are emphasized. The cable profile in continuous prestressed post-tensioned members is defined by a series of parabolas tangentially connected to circular arcs over the supports. Each parabola is expressed by a second degree binominal equation. Relevant design parameters are derived from the conjugate relationships between the geometric properties of the curves and the related force effects. From basic concepts of the load balancing method an expression for the prestressing force required to resist the externally applied loads is derived.
