PRODUCTION, TESTING AND LAYING OF THE AND TAR/BITUMEN MATERIALS IN STATIONARY COATING PLANTS
This report gives the current position in the use of tar and tar/bitumen road materials in West Germany. Details are given of the preparation of materials in coating plants and their laying. Consideration is given to the composition of tar/bitumen with regard to practical requirements. The most important technical specifications and codes of practice for the construction of bituminous road surfaces, as well as the quality and testing requirements for bituminous binders, are currently being revised. Details of the testing of tar and tar/bitumen and the mixes prepared from them are briefly discussed. Research into the surface properties of tar/bitumen wearing courses is outlined, the anti-skid behaviour being particularly considered. Finally, preliminary results using PVC/tar as binder in wearing courses are reported, a first full-scale trial having been carried out in 1970. /TRRL/
