EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF A FOUNDATION BEAM RESTING ON REAL SOIL

ESTUDIO EXPERIMENTAL DE UNA VIGA DE FUNDACION QUE APOYA SOBRE SUELO REAL

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO RESOLVE THE ACTUAL PROBLEM OF A SHALLOW FOUNDATION, USING NEITHER THE WINKLER MODEL, NOR THE THEORY OF ELASTIC HALF-SPACE. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES WERE USED, SUCH AS THE PHOTOELASTIC TECHNIQUE. A BEAM OF CONSTANT RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION (100x45x19.4 MM) WAS CHOSEN FOR THE TEST, RESTING ON FINE LIMEY SAND AND SUBJECT TO A LOAD CONCENTRATED IN THE CENTER OF THE BEAM. THE PHOTOELASTIC MODEL WAS MADE IN ARALDIT RESIN, WITH AN ELASTIC MODULUS OF 33,600 KG/CM2 AND A POISSON'S RATIO OF 0.38. TWO TYPES OF TESTS WERE PERFORMED: (A) THE INTENSITY OF THE LOAD WAS VARIED, KEEPING THE SOIL IN THE SAME INITIAL COMPACTION CONDITIONS: (B) THE SAME LOAD WAS APPLIED, BUT DEGREE OF COMPACTION OF THE SOIL WAS VARIED. DURING TYPE A TESTS, IT COULD BE SEEN THAT THE INCREASE IN LOAD DID NOT PRODUCE AN INCREASE IN TANGENTIAL STRESSES OF SAME PROPORTION AND THAT THE LENGTH OF THE SECTION SUBJECT TO THE HIGHEST STRESS ON THE LOWER EDGE OF THE BEAM, WAS KEPT CONSTANT. DURING TYPE B TESTS, BENDING INCREASED AS THE COMPACTION OF THE SOIL WAS REDUCED, AND AT THE SAME TIME, THE LENGTH OF THE SECTION OF THE BEAM SUBJECT TO THE HIGHEST STRESS INCREASED.
