STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF PILES

THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES DIRECT METHODS AVAILABLE FOR TESTING THE SOUNDNESS OF CAST-IN-PLACE, LARGE DIAMETER PILES. METHODS EXAMINED INCLUDE INSPECTION, TEST LOADING; SHAFT COMPRESSION; BORE-HOLE DRILLING METHODS USING INSPECTION BY CALLIPER LOGGING, AND ACOUSTIC SCANNING TECHNIQUES; PREFORMED BOREHOLE METHODS USING SINGLE AND TWIN TUBE SONIC TESTING, AND ALSO RADIOMETRIC LOGGING TECHNIQUES; AND, VIBRATION TESTING. ALTHOUGH DEFECTS MAY BE DETECTED IN PILES USING THESE METHODS, THERE IS AT THE MOMENT NO WAY OF DETERMINING THE RESULTANT LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY OF THE AFFECTED PILE.
