ROAD TRAFFIC. A CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESEARCH FOR SAFETY EQUATIONS

IN THIS PAPER IT IS SUGGESTED THAT FROM A SAFETY POINT OF VIEW, MAN, ROAD AND THE VEHICLE, SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS A SYSTEM IN WHICH MAN SHOULD BE REGARDED AS A MEMBER OF THE BIOLOGICAL SCALE AND NOT AS THE MASTER. THE ROLE OF THE ROAD IN THE DYNAMICS OF TRAFFIC, IS ANALYSED. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE CONCEPT OF A ROAD LAY-OUT BEING MERELY A FUNCTION OF VEHICLE DYNAMICS, IS LARGELY OUT-DATED, BASED ON THE FACT THAT MOUNTAIN ROADS HAVE A LOWER ACCIDENT RATE THAN EASY ROADS; THIS SEEMS TO INDICATE THAT, IN TERMS OF SAFETY A LOW MENTAL LOAD (ON THE DRIVER) IS LESS DESIRABLE THAN A MORE INTENSE ONE. THERE IS SOME BASIS FOR THE SUPPOSITION THAT A DRIVER'S ATTENTION TENDS TO RELAX IN DIRECT RATIO TO THE INCREASE IN THE EASINESS OF DRIVING CONDITIONS, IN PURSUIT OF WHICH THE LONG WIDE CURVES OF MODERN ROADS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED.
