DIAPHRAGM WALLED TUNNEL AWAITS NEWCASTLE'S METRO SCHEME

THE AUTHOR GIVES AN ACCOUNT OF USE OF THE BENTONITE SLURRY TRENCHING TECHNIQUE TO CONSTRUCT THE DIAPHRAGM WALLS OF THE TUNNEL IN NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE. THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED IN TWO PHASES OF 14 WEEKS AND 9 WEEKS RESPECTIVELY. THE WALLS ARE ABOUT 201M LONG, 813MM THICK AND PENETRATE THE GROUND TO A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF 12.2M. AFTER GIVING AN OUTLINE OF THE GENERAL TECHNIQUE USED THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE WALL/ROOF JOINTING DETAIL. THE STRUCTURAL CONCRETE OF THE WALLS WAS POURED TO 1.8M BELOW THE SURFACE AND THE TOP OF THE TRENCH MADE UP WITH LEAN CONCRETE. SUBSEQUENTLY THE AREA OF THE TUNNEL ROOF WAS EXCAVATED, BINDING PLACED TO THE LEVEL OF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE ROOF SLAB, THE LEAN CONCRETE REMOVED AND THE ROOFING CONCRETE PLACED IN ROAD-SLAB FASHION USING ALPHA SPLICING INSTEAD OF BENDING OVER CAGE BARS AT THE JOINT. THE LATER EXCAVATION OF THE TUNNEL IS DISCUSSED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO VENTILATION AND TRENDS IN WATERPROOFING IN VIENNA AND GERMANY. THE REMAINDER OF THE ARTICLE IS CONCERNED WITH THE PROGRESS OF THE NEWCASTLE URBAN MOTORWAY, PARTICULAR REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF ANTI-NOISE SCREENS. THESE ARE PROVIDED BY THE ADJACENT MULTI-STOREY PROPERTY WHICH WILL HAVE NO WINDOWS, BUT SHELVES AND RECESSES WILL BE PROVIDED FOR PLANTING WITH CREEPERS AND SHRUBS TO BREAK AND ABSORB NOISE & ALSO GIVE A MORE PLEASING APPEARANCE THAN PLAIN CONCRETE.
