ROADS AND ROAD USE IN AUSTRALIA, STATISTICAL SUMMARY 1971

CONTINUING THE SERIES INITIATED IN 1967 (DARWIN AND SOLOMON) THIS ARTICLE UPDATES PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED DATA WHILE PROVIDING STATISTICS FOR THE YEAR ENDING 30 JUNE, 1971. THE TERMINOLOGY USED CONFORMS TO THAT ADOPTED BY THE AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS, FORMERLY THE COMMONWEALTH BUREAU OF CENSUS AND STATISTICS (CBCS). REFERENCE TO THE LATTER HAS BEEN MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT THE TABLES THAT FOLLOW. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ACCOUNTS, NATIONAL INCOME AND EXPENDITURE (ANANIE) CONTAINS DETAILED EXPLANATIONS AND DEFINITIONS OF THE VARIOUS TERMS USED. FINANCIAL STATISTICS ARE AGAIN SHOWN IN TERMS OF CONSTANT PRICES, RELATIVE TO THE BASE YEAR CHOSEN, 1960. ALL PHYSICAL DATA ARE PRESENTED BOTH IN METRIC AND IMPERIAL UNITS. IN ADDITION TO PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED TABLES, INFORMATION ABOUT VEHICLE POWER AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO FUEL CONSUMPTION HAS BEEN INCLUDED FOR THE FIRST TIME. SUGGESTIONS FOR EXPANDING THIS ASPECT OF THE WORK AND MAKING IT MORE USEFUL WOULD BE WELCOMED. (A)
