MINITRAM SET FOR SKYLINE RUN

THIS ARTICLE IS CONCERNED WITH THE FEASIBILITY OF MINITRAM SYSTEMS IN CITIES WITH MEDIUM-SIZED POPULATION, LARGE TRAFFIC JAMS AND LIMITED FINANCIAL RESOURCES. THE AUTHOR BRIEFLY COMPARES SUCH A SYSTEM WITH THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY AND ITS DEVELOPMENT VIA THE CABTRACK SYSTEM. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE COST IS MUCH LESS THAN AN UNDERGROUND SYSTEM AND THAT ITS CAPACITY (10,000 PASSENGERS PER HOUR) MATCHES THE NEEDS OF A MEDIUM SIZED CITY, WHERE THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR THE LARGER CAPACITY (40 000) PER HOUR) OF AN UNDERGROUND RAILWAY. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TWO VEHICLE AND CONTROL SYSTEMS THAT HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY EASAMS AND HAWKER SIDDLEY DYNAMICS LTD RESPECTIVELY (INCLUDING DIAGRAMS DEPICTING EACH SYSTEM) AND A FEASIBILITY STUDY INTO THE PLANNING, CIVIL ENGINEERING AND OPERATION OF SUCH A SYSTEM IN SHEFFIELD. THE ARTICLE CONCLUDES WITH AN OUTLINE OF THE RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES WHICH RELATE TO A found12 MILLION PROJECT INVOLVING A 2.4KM LENGTH OF MINITRAM SYSTEM THROUGH THE SHOPPING SPINE OF SHEFFIELD WHICH WOULD LINK THE RAILWAY STATION TO MOORFOOT.
