STEM TRANSPORTATION PLAN, CURITIBA, BRAZIL

A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE TRANSPORTATION PLAN DEVELOPED FOR CURITIBA, BRAZIL, WHICH IS BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF A LINEAR DEVELOPMENT AS DISTINCT FROM A RADIAL-CONCENTRIC PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT. TAKING THE PLACE OF THE PREVIOUS HIGHLY CONGESTED SIX-LANE MAJOR ACCESS ROUTE, THE TRANSPORTATION LINEAR DEVELOPMENT CONSISTS OF THREE ACCESS WAYS IN WHICH THE OUTER TWO ARE FAST ONE-WAY CAR ROUTES, WHILE THE CENTRE ONE CONSISTS OF THREE TWO-LANE ROADWAYS. THE CENTRAL TWO LANES ARE RESERVED FOR EXPRESS BUSES WHILE THE OUTER LANES ARE FOR SLOW-MOVING LOCAL TRAFFIC. TERMINALS ARE PLANNED EVERY 800M ALONG THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM TO PROVIDE CHANGE OF MODE FACILITIES. THE CENTRAL AREA OF THE CITY HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AS A SYSTEM OF ONE-WAY STREETS, PEDESTRIAN AREAS AND TRANSPORTATION TERMINALS.
