EXPLOSION-BONDED METALS FOR MARINE STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS

The application of explosion-bonded aluminum-to-steel welding transition joints on marine vessels is discussed. Evaluation of this material's suitability for joining aluminum superstructures to steel decks is reviewed in detail. Galvanic corrosion is demonstrated to be negligible, thereby providing significant savings on maintenance costs when compared to mechanical connections. It is shown that mechanical properties, design adaptability, and installation costs meet marine-industry requirements.
