This paper reviews the structure of the railroads of the western United States and describes the merger and/or consolidation efforts and accomplishments over the years from 1920 though 1974. Many railroads have disappeared from the activity during the years, in some cases reappearing as parts of new systems under new names. The half-century of change, or non change, should be viewed as a preliminary to the reader's own prognostication for the western railroads.
