OPEN GRADED ASPHALT FRICTION COURSE DOES ITS JOBS

An open graded asphalt friction course placed in 1973 is considered to have caused a substantial reduction in accidents. The open graded mix permits water to flow through rather than on the surface thus reducing hydroplaning, a phenomenon considered responsible for skidding. Research is continuing in the state of Maryland on the skid resistance of various mixes, including the open graded mixes.
