PREFABRICATION PRIMERS FOR MARINE USE
The protective painting of new ships during construction by the practice of blast cleaning and ship priming is discussed. The importance of complete removal of millscale and techniques of airless blast cleaning are described. Criteria that primers must meet are given, and the advantages and disadvantages of various organic and inorganic formulations are examined. Methods of measuring film thickness and the application of subsequent paint coats are discussed. A method of calculating total primer costs is given.
